Frequently Asked Questions

Is it hard? How easy is it?

  • No! Once you do the planning, it’s very easy, and provides safety to both sides of the deck. This is meant to make everyone feel safe, during their worst days. You can prop a card up on your desk, you can hand your card to your person directly, or you can pin it to your door so everyone knows. You just have to let others know you’re in this place and need this thing. Then they can help you.

Who are they for?

  • Humans need communication, plain and simple. They’re meant for partners, parents/children, best friends, caregivers/PCAs, children and grandchildren, roommates, neighbors, neurospicy families, basically humans. If you can’t ask, if you don’t want to ask, if you’re embarrassed to ask, if there’s shame around asking, if asking prevents you from getting help… these are for you.

How do I use these?

  • These are for your worst days or bad moments, or you’re emotional and don’t want to talk, etc. You and your person plan for them on a good day. Sit down and discuss what each person wants to happen when a card is used; be as specific or as general as you prefer, but make sure you both understand what that is. This is where the book comes in; write down each plan. You’re not going to remember it on the bad days (I sure don’t), and if you’re both having a bad day on the same day? Nobody remembers a thing. Having them already planned out and easy to grab, is priceless.

Can I change the cards or make my own?

  • Yes! The point is being heard. If there are cards that don’t apply to you, then you can replace the text on one with what you need. I can change it in the book as well. We’ll work together to make your deck Yours. These are the sizes 2x3, 4x6, and 5x7 I have available. You can mix sizes if you need them. I have a huge hyperfocus so I’m left alone when I’m working.

What’s the point of the book?

  • The book has the answers to the questions of the universe; or at least your plan. It’s meant to protect the partner, as the answers are right there, planned out when y’all were happy and healthy. If you get a card, the answer is in the book. It will probably have notes as you learn and change the answers once you feel better. Also, change the answers as you learn what you need, as you learn to have help. It could start very intense, and relax as you get used to things, or vice versa.

What’s up with the art?

  • I can’t read when I’m panicking. I need to be able to tell the cards apart when I need them. So, art. I’m a photographer, so I teamed up with another artist, Alithea Howes, to do some art for the Human Deck. I plan to collaborate with other artists in future decks as well. Now, you can tell which art gets you which helps, if you can’t read or are crying or you prefer the art.

Are there more decks coming?

  • Yes. The PTSD deck is about to be released. Following that are Perimenopause and Depression, both before the winter holidays. I’m also collaborating with a couple of teachers to make a deck ideal for schools/ESL kids. There are plans for several more decks to come.

Can I do this online?

  • Not yet, but we hope to have an app soon. This is pretty young.

I’m interested in collaborating.

  • Great, send me a message! I’m looking for artists.
